I honestly hadn't until we partnered with the International Sports Federation (ISF). I decided to do a quick google search and typed in "Egoli, South Africa". I kid you not, the first thing that popped up was a Soap Opera called, "Egoli: Place of Gold". Honestly, not at all what I expected to pop up. Egoli is also an alternative name for Johannesburg. Interesting, but still not what I was expecting to find. What I was looking for is located on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa at the foot of Table Mountain. This is where you will find a squatter camp where twenty-five thousand people are crammed in the equivalent of 2 city blocks living in abject poverty. Sixty percent of the population in Egoli are under the age of 14 years old. Many of these children are orphaned and have no one to care for them.

Let's briefly look at what abject poverty means. Poverty is the state of being extremely poor. Abject is used to emphasize a situation or quality that is extremely bad. One word that I saw over and over on my search of the word abject was this, "hopeless". 

I don't want to leave you at hopeless. Cue in Pastor Brian Keet, his wife Glenda and the Tekiah Church. These incredible people are who we will be working with during our time in South Africa. Pastor Brian and his church saw great need and have set out to give these people hope. Thus the Mountain View Dream Centre was born. The Dream Centre is a dream in progress with many dreams having come to fruition and more dreams yet to be fulfilled. Ben, JoJo and I will be going to assist Pastor Brian and the Tekiah Church with their mission to combat poverty and give the children and people of Egoli a better tomorrow.

What is Egoli?

**Hello there!**

We are Ben, Paige and Josephine Grace (JoJo) Herrick. Welcome to our blog! BenandPaigeHerrick.com is where we will keep you updated on what is going on in our ministry. Grab a cup of coffee or tea, get in a comfy chair and let's visit a while.

For those of you unfamiliar with us, we hail from Missouri. Ben and I have been married just over 2 years and our little JoJo will soon be celebrating her first birthday!

So, how did we come to be entering the missions field? Well, missions is something Ben and I have discussed since we were dating. We both have hearts and careers bent towards service. Ben has experience both domestically and internationally in youth development as well as sports and project management. His experience includes co-founding day camps for children with incarcerated parents, building youth sports programs in Peru and leading groups of kids on service projects in Cuba. I am a registered nurse with 12 years experience. Most of my career has largely been in cardiology (heart related) fields and one incredible year as a school nurse. I have also volunteered and served with local churches during VBS and gone on missions trips domestically. Our little JoJo will serve along side us as our beautiful little barrier breaker.

We are excited to be partnering with the International Sports Federation (ISF) and the local churches to aide the impoverished in Cape Town, South Africa and the forcibly displaced refugees in Athens, Greece.

We leave for Cape Town, South Africa in April 2022. We will spend 2 months serving there. We will then head onto Athens, Greece for 1 month. We have been invited to serve in other European contexts if funds allow.

Mandela wrote in his autobiography 'Long Walk to Freedom' that, "His people didn't lack ability, but lacked opportunities." Though apartheid ended in 1994, there continues to be a huge disparity between the rich and the poor people of South Africa. The issue of poverty is entangled with years of political corruption, unemployment, housing shortages, and a racist caste system separating people by creed and color.

Want to hear a modern day David and Goliath story? (1 Samuel 17). Cue in Pastor Brian and Glenda Keet and the Tekiah Church. The Keets are taking the poverty battle head on. Pastor Brian and Glenda are native to the area and knew that the people living in Egoli were in need of help. Initially, Pastor Brian and the Tekiah Church went into the informal settlement to feed hungry people. Because of the immense need witnessed in Egoli, the Tekiah Foundation and the Mountain View Dream Centre (where we will be serving with Pastor Brian and Glenda) were created to give a safe place of refuge and hope for the future generations living in Egoli. (Jeremiah 29:11)

Imagine living in a home with no electricity, no heat, no running water, no floor. Imagine that the shack you live in gets destroyed about 3 times a year when the winds blow across the Cape or when kerosene starts a fire in the winter. Imagine not knowing when, where or how you and your children will get the next meal. Imagine orphans trying to survive these conditions on their own. These situations and more are everyday realities in Egoli and other informal settlements like it. Seems pretty hopeless, right?

Just like in David and Goliath, the Keets are overcoming what seems impossible. Because of generous donors and the grace and faithfulness of God, the Keets and the Tekiah Church are able to combat poverty and give hope to the hopeless. Hundreds are fed a warm breakfast and the word of God each and everyday. Programs have been created to engage the children and teach them sports, singing, and dance. Children that aren't in school that ought to be, are helped to get an education. A medical clinic has been set up with the aid of area healthcare workers on Thursdays. Pastor Glenda leads a women's bible study group on Monday nights. Ben and I are very excited for the most recent project the Keets are working on: construction of a workshop! This workshop will be used to teach basic trades and carpentry to people who currently lack skills, so that they have an opportunity for employment.

There are many more goals and dreams for what the Mountainview Dream Centre will become. These dreams include: putting a roof on the church, building a multi-sport facility, and an orphanage. The Keets run an NGO...meaning they build when money comes in. To quote Pastor Brian, "They live by faith with big goals". They know how to be content when they have plenty and in times of lack. (Phillipians 4:11-13). They have been a tremendous blessing and example of living by faith to Ben and I. We are blessed to know the Keets! Ben and I are very excited and looking forward to working alongside the Keets and the Tekiah Church sharing the Gospel and providing opportunities to those with none.

We welcome you to partner with us and become an active participant in this unfolding story! Some Christians believe that the role of sharing the Gospel belongs only to pastors and missionaries, but everyone has the responsibility to be involved. Just like in David and Goliath, the Keets are overcoming what seems impossible.

A Modern Day David & Goliath

##### Most of you know the saying...or some variation of it. "Whenever God closes a door, He opens a window". Well, that in a nutshell is how our God journey began. 

Ben and I had been renting a duplex since we got married. When our daughter was about 2 months old, we got notice from our landlords that they were putting our unit up for sale. We were pretty shell shocked by this news. Our initial plan had never been to stay in the Mid-Missouri area long. However, by-in-large, both of our families live in Missouri. With our new baby and plans to continue growing our little family of three, we dove head first into the craziest housing market we have ever seen. We house hunted and house hunted....and house hunted. We put offers in on a few properties with nothing coming to fruition. Finally, we found a cute little fixer upper with good bones. We put in an offer and it was accepted! We were elated to be under contract for our first home! The inspection was passing with flying colors. I was planning interior and exterior home designs. Then the hammer fell. The sewer inspection was a GIGANTIC fail. Essentially, the entire sewer system was complete poop (pun intended). It was going to be in the ballpark of twenty-thousand dollars to fix. We thought surely the home owners would negotiate price? No dice. With our current home officially sold and us needing to be moved out in a few short weeks, we walked away from the house that we thought we were moving into. Thankfully, all of our parents are amazing and helped us to navigate through our housing debacle. 

Doors Closed.

Simultaneous to our house hunt, Ben was on the job hunt. His job was contracted and we had no idea if the contract would be renewed for the following year. There were several good leads. Over and over he made it to the final interview. None of them ended with a job offer for us. Fortunately, Ben's contract was extended and God has provided an income until we leave in January.

Doors Closed. 

In the midst of all that chaos, Ben had reconnected with an old friend who serves on the mission field with the International Sports Federation (ISF). This is usually where I ask Ben to take over telling our story. I'll try to make it concise. The long and short of it is that Ben and I started prayerfully discussing entering the mission field. I wish I could say that when God knocked I was ready and willing, but that wasn't entirely the case. It's not that I was unwilling....I just wanted to pump the brakes on a train that was quickly gaining momentum. We had several meetings with Ben's friend and the director of ISF. We figured we would have a rigorous application period. We wondered if they would even allow us to partner with them? We couldn't have been more wrong. We were welcomed with open arms and asked where we wanted to go. We were baffled....and speechless. Only after reassurances that we would not be air-dropped into the middle of nowhere with our new baby did I finally let God's peace wash over me. 

Windows opened. 

We are partnering with the International Sports Federation and will embark for Cape Town, South Africa on January 19, 2022. There we will be working with those living in abject poverty. After our 3 months in Cape Town, we will come home for 3 weeks and regroup. After that we leave for Athens, Greece. We will be in Athens for 3 months where we will work with forcibly displaced refugees. If funds allow, we have been invited to visit other European contexts in the summer of 2022.

Our God Journey

God is so faithful and oh so good! He provides for our every need. (Philippians 4:19). Ben and I are excited to share that God has provided through your giving! Our March 15th financial deadline was met on March 13th! Currently, 75% of the funds required for our vision trip to South Africa and Greece have been raised. Praise be to God!

Our next financial deadline is set for April 15th. We look forward to how God moves in the coming months.

If funds allow, we have opportunities to serve refugees in France and Italy following our service in South Africa and Greece. We were just informed today of opportunities to serve Ukranian refugees in Ireland and Poland as well. We are praying by faith that God will open doors that no man can shut and allow us to serve His kingdom in each of these capacities. (2 Corinthians 9:8).

Raise A Hallelujah

*"Rejoice, you are a threat." Interesting choice for a family motto, eh?*

That's not exactly a phrase you hear everyday. But it's been Paige, Jojo, and I's enduring family motto for the last several months. 
When Paige and I made the commitment to serve in South Africa and Greece with the International Sports Federation, a wealth of emotions ensued. Excitement, nervousness, anticipation, worries, fears, questions, and peace all swirled about. The key one there in that list is peace. We have been learning that amongst the chaos, peace can not only survive, it can thrive. Now how the heck does that make sense? 
Everlasting assurance. 

Anyone who knows me well knows I am goals-driven. I work hard to make my dreams happen. Dreams don't come true. They are made true. Being "Brass Tacks Ben" does have its strengths and positives: I get the job done, work hard to make it so, and strive to do so in the best ways possible. However, a strength in excess is a weakness. 

And one of my own is self-reliance. I make a lot of goals, to-dos, and plans. Sometimes, they work out just as I had intended. Most of the time though, things go "awry," and adaptation isn't always my strong suit. Sure, I can roll with the punches with the right attitude, but sometimes I lean into them too hard. Or, I get lazy and don't focus on what's truly most important. I get bent out of shape because what I worked so hard on, isn't working out. It's times like these where a recent golden nugget was given to me that rings loudly: If things work out the way we plan, how would we ever see God's work in motion? 

Everlasting assurance is not the guarantee that our dreams, goals, relationships, jobs, and lives will work out the way we hope. Or even happily at all. What everlasting assurance is, is the promise that we are eternally loved by a God who is always prepared to welcome us. God is always ready for us. The Lord does not let us down. Oh yea, God can be confusing, sometimes maddeningly so, and certainly lets us live and suffer consequences...sometimes ones that aren't even our fault. But, at the end of the day, Paige and I truly know that when we are at our best and brightest, or our lowest and darkest, Jesus is there. 

What is crucial to understand is that where light shines, there is a darkness ready and willing to snuff it out. 
Readers, I must say, the journey has been hard sometimes. Immediately after our commitment, Paige, Jojo, and I were body slammed. Quite literally. Week after week, we three have endured a version of musical chairs. Only this time we are trading places for who is sick this time. Paige would be really sick for a week. Then myself. Then Jojo. And repeat. It was so tiresome. Our hearts and bodies were worn out. We knew we were being attacked. And the attacks kept coming.

A few weeks ago, I got hammered with Covid-19. Sure enough, Paige and Jojo followed suit. It has not been easy in recovery. Thankfully, we are healing. What was so telling to me was literally right after Paige and I had a wonderful call with Pastor Brian and Glenda in South Africa, we came down with Covid after no known exposures. Although our bodies took another beating, we knew: this really is a fight. Evil wanted us to have no momentum. It doesn't end there. 

Uncertainty is a tough nemesis. Doubts creep in. Will Jojo respond well to living in an entirely different culture? Will there be an emergency and we can't find help? Will we be able to raise enough financial support to make this happen? Are there enough people who believe in this opportunity? 
Those questions have some validity. But, they're not the right questions. You see, those all depend on "us." It's people-focused, not God-focused. I won't sugarcoat it: things may go awry and disasters may strike. We call that: life. But, we have the everlasting assurance that God called us to this opportunity so that no matter what does or does not happen, we know we are living in obedience to the Lord. It is because of this obedience that we are being attacked. Evil does not want goodness to triumph. And it will do anything and everything it can to strike us down. It can be a formidable opponent.

 
We must respect the capacity of our opponents. 

And right now, Paige and I are learning how much capacity we have as opponents against evil. In Acts 28:26 of the Bible, the author writes, "You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving." What an awful way to live is one of my first thoughts. Furthermore, it teaches me that when God speaks, I better listen. Now, I'm not one who believes every bad thing in life is the result of sin and evil. But, I do believe when we open our hearts and truly listen, we will discover ourselves experiencing more certainty and peace in our lives even when all around us is chaotic. It truly shows we can rejoice that we are threats to the darkness that does not want communities united, hearts of caring and service, and smiles shared. My encouragement to you, is to remember that when you are feeling beat down, do a "soul check" and maybe, just maybe, you'll find that you can rejoice because you're a threat to evil. And a gift to what is good.

Paragraphs are usually represented in visual media as blocks of text separated from adjacent blocks by blank lines and/or first-line [indentation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indentation_(typesetting)), but <abbr title="HyperText Markup Language">HTML</abbr> paragraphs can be any structural grouping of related content, such as images or form fields.

The HTML &lt;h1&gt;–&lt;h6&gt; elements represent six levels of section headings. &lt;h1&gt; is the highest section level and &lt;h6&gt; is the lowest.

Avoid using heading tags to resize text. Instead, use the CSS font-size property. Headings use size to indicate their relative importance, but CSS is preferred for general-purpose resizing.

## Quoting

The HTML blockquote element defines a long block quotation in the HTML document from another source.

A URL for the source of the quotation may be given using the cite attribute, while a text representation of the source can be given using the &lt;cite&gt; element.

## Unordered Lists

Groups a collection of items that do not have a numerical ordering, and their order in the list is meaningless.

+ Donec id eros eget quam aliquam gravida
+ Vivamus convallis urna id felis
+ Nulla porta tempus sapien

## Ordered Lists

Represents a list of items. The only difference from the unordered list is taht the order of the items is meaningful.

2. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit
3. Donec id eros eget quam aliquam gravida
4. Vivamus convallis urna id felis
